Boom Lifts

I don't work for the Army anymore, but I used to operate
ARL's JLG 150HAX,
a self propelled aerial platform capable of operation
at up to 150 feet high or out to 70 feet over and 80
feet high. To the right is a picture taken from the
maximum height of the boom. The base you see is a mere
18 feet square.
It is currently used to hold the UWB impulse SAR, which
we use to search for targets obscured because they
are buried, or hidden in foliage. There is not very much
foliage in the picture to the left, since we happen to
be in the Arizona desert testing the ground penetrating
capabilites of our radar. We spent most of January 1996
in the Desert working on this radar.
My coworkers and I have learned how not to load the basket. It is
a really strange feeling to have the rod of a hydraulic cylinder bend
while it is holding 1000 pounds and $1,000,000 of electronics over
your head.
